Bringing the Thistle in

Once I had the plaids finished, I began laying the thistle on top of the felted textures.  I wasn’t happy with the look of the detailed flowers against the plaid, so I started using my filters in Corel Painter to bring a new dimension to the flowers.  After a few tries, I wound up with the florals above.  I liked the dimension of the cream flowers against the  dark background, but I didn’t like it reversed – the very textured flowers in the darker shades against the cream plaid just didn’t work, so I used a greige (my favorite color word) and the darker flowers worked.  So I worked on the scale and layout, keeping in mind that my market is generally home decor.

Here’s the first try with the detailed flowers.  I think at some point those thistles will find their way into a new design.   Then, I decided I needed a print in the collection that was different – so why not a woodland?  That’s up next…Thistle Plaid TN
